Lex
Nichol
I'm a
freelance television editor, with extensive experience using both
Avid and Final Cut to create high quality programming for British
television. I’m highly versatile and equally competent working from
an existing format or developing a new format from scratch. I’m
used to crafting narratives from sometimes challenging stories,
often offering or writing commentary myself to help with a story.
I’m best under pressure and love the challenge of working on tight
schedules and with the odd spanner threatening to jump into the
works.

Facility
Hire
I have my own FCP
and Avid Media Composer setup available for hire. Very competitive
rates available on request.
Additional
Skills
I am a good lightweight camera operator and am extremely useful on
any shoot - working a project from start to finish is when I come
into my own.
It’s also worth speaking if you’re in a pre-production state and
want to think about formats and storage for editing. I can often
offer useful advise for dealing with options such as international
versioning in the most cost effective manner.
I have many years radio experience and have narrated for shows on
ITV 1 and Al Jazeera.
I’m
also extremely technically competent having built several edit
suites over the years, and have been running post production at
Original Productions over the last couple of years.
History
I started working on Avids at the age of 16 as an Edit Assistant,
and was soon asked to edit a short film to be shown to the United
Nations when no other editors were available. I did some camera
assisting before heading off to Southampton University where I
became manager of the student radio station. Putting most of my
energy into 'Surge' instead of my course in Engineering, I opted to
change degrees and go to Leeds to study broadcasting.
I stayed in Leeds after University and started working at Chameleon
Television as an assistant editor / lightweight cameraman. I
started my edit career working on Dispatches and other documentary
for Channel Four before cutting 12 hour long music biographies for
ITV 1. In January 2007 I moved from Leeds to London and began my
freelance career. Most of 2007 was spent working at Al Jazeera's
English language station on Entertainment programmes, '48' and the
'Fabulous Picture Show'. In 2008 I spent time on various projects,
mostly for Original Productions on ‘Living with the Dead’ and
‘Ibiza 2008’. In 2009 I continued working at Original on ‘Trawlers,
Rigs and Rescue’ for Virgin 1 before continuing on ‘Deadly North
Sea’ into 2010.
